‘Nimoshom and His Bus’ (Illustrations by Karen Hibbard)
Karen is a freelance illustrator and has illustrated children’s picture books, juvenile fiction, YA fiction and non-fiction, children’s poetry, video-poetry. She is still drawn into the imaginative worlds depicted by children’s picture books.
Using a variety of media, Karen tends to use traditional materials- watercolour / ink & brush / pastel / graphite for children’s picture books because of their inherent sensitivity and warmth. However, she is adept with digital art, drawing in Photoshop or scanning in handmade images to be transformed digitally.
Portage & Main Press, “Nimoshom and His Bus” by Penny M. Thomas
Most recently, she completed a picture book for Portage & Main Press, “Nimoshom and His Bus” by Penny M. Thomas. The story is based on her grandfather’s life as a school bus driver. Through his story telling, he engaged his charges thoroughly. There is a sprinkling of Cree word and expressions throughout.
